Budgie Cages Buying Guide
Short answer: a budgie cage should be wider than it is tall, with bar spacing of about 1–1.2 cm and some horizontal bars for climbing. For one or two budgies, look for at least about 50 cm wide inside. A flight cage of 75 cm or more gives a pair or a small flock room to fly between perches. Budgies also need time out of the cage every day.
This guide covers size, bar spacing, shape and set-up, then shows the cages in our range that fit.

How big should a budgie cage be?
Budgies fly side to side, not up and down, so width matters most. A cage at least about 50 cm wide inside gives one or two budgies room to hop and flutter between perches. If you’re keeping a pair or more, or your budgie spends a lot of time in the cage, a flight cage 75 cm wide or more is a better choice. Bigger is always better, as long as the bar spacing stays right.
What bar spacing does a budgie need?
About 1–1.2 cm (10–12 mm). Wider than that and a budgie can escape, or push its head between the bars and get stuck. Our bar spacing guide compares spacing for every bird size.
Cage shape and bars
Choose a rectangular cage. Round cages give less usable space and no corners to settle in. Horizontal bars on at least two sides let budgies climb, which they love.
Setting up a budgie cage
- Perches: two or three natural wood perches of different thicknesses, at different heights, leaving clear flying space between them.
- Food and water: bowls that aren’t under perches, so they stay clean.
- Toys: a few, rotated weekly. Don’t fill the cage so full that there’s no room to fly. If you use rope toys, read our bird-safe rope guide first.
- Placement: in a room where people spend time, away from draughts, direct sun and kitchen fumes.
- Cleaning: spot-clean daily and give it a full clean weekly.

Budgie cage FAQs
What size cage does a budgie need?
At least about 50 cm wide inside for one or two budgies. Go wider for more birds; a 75 cm+ flight cage is ideal for a pair.
What bar spacing does a budgie need?
About 1–1.2 cm (10–12 mm).
Are round cages bad for budgies?
They give less usable space and no corners to settle in. A rectangular cage is better.
Can I keep two budgies in one cage?
Yes. Budgies are social and usually happier in pairs, as long as the cage is big enough. Give each bird its own perch space and food bowl.
How often should I clean a budgie cage?
Spot-clean droppings and old food daily, and do a full clean of the tray, perches and bowls once a week.
Do budgies need time out of the cage?
Yes. Even in a large cage, budgies benefit from daily supervised time out in a bird-safe room.
