Quaker Parrot Cages UK: Sizes, Bar Spacing & Best Picks

Short answer: a quaker parrot (monk parakeet) needs a cage of at least about 60 cm wide by 45 cm deep, and bigger if you can manage it. Look for bar spacing of about 1.5–2 cm and sturdy wire, because quakers are clever chewers and escape artists. A medium parrot cage with a play top suits most quakers well.

Quakers are only around 28–30 cm long, but they’re busy, noisy and love to build and rearrange things. Space to climb, room for toys, and secure doors matter more than looks. Below are the cages we sell that fit those needs, with measurements taken from each product page.

Quaker cage checklist

  • Width first: at least 60 cm inside, so your quaker can flap and move along its perches.
  • Bar spacing: about 1.5–2 cm. Much wider and a quaker could get its head stuck.
  • Wire strength: 3 mm or more is a good target for a determined chewer.
  • Secure doors: quakers learn to lift latches. Add a clip or small padlock if yours works it out.
  • Play top: handy for supervised time out of the cage.
  • Easy cleaning: a pull-out tray, a floor grille and seed catchers keep the mess down.

How big should a quaker cage be?

Treat 60 × 45 cm of floor space as the minimum for one quaker, with enough height for a couple of perch levels. If your bird spends more than a few hours a day inside, or you keep a pair, go up to a cage of 80 cm or more wide. Extra width gives a quaker room to stretch its wings, which height alone doesn’t.

Bar spacing and wire strength

Quakers are small enough that wide parrot bars are a risk. Avoid cages built for macaws or large cockatoos with 2.5 cm spacing. Equally, light budgie wire won’t stand up to a quaker’s beak for long. The sweet spot is 1.5–2 cm spacing and 3–3.5 mm wire. Our bar spacing guide explains why.

Security matters for another reason too. Monk parakeets are a listed non-native species in Great Britain, so a quaker that escapes and lives wild is more than a sad loss. A well-locked cage protects your bird and the countryside.

Rainforest Santa Marta: our first choice for a quaker

The Santa Marta measures 84 × 51 × 140 cm inside, with 2 cm bars and 3 mm wire. It comes with an 86 cm internal perch, a 78 cm play-top perch and three 13 cm bowls. That’s plenty of room for one quaker, and enough for a bonded pair. It comes in Stone or Antique and fits Cage Cover Size 5.

Rainforest Bolivia: for the serious chewer

The Bolivia has the heaviest wire on this list (3.5 mm) and tighter 1.5 cm bars, which is reassuring if your quaker attacks everything. It’s 61 × 56 × 153 cm, so it’s narrower than the Santa Marta, but it adds a play top with two 62 cm perches and two bowls. It fits Cage Cover Size 3.

Rainforest Amazona II: wide and calm

The Amazona II gives you 81 cm of width and close 1 cm bars, with an 81 cm internal perch, a play-top perch and four bowls. Its 2 mm wire is lighter, so it suits a gentler quaker rather than a heavy chewer. It can be used without the stand.

Setting up a quaker cage

  • Perches: mix natural wood perches of different thicknesses at two or three heights.
  • Toys: quakers love shredding and foraging. Rotate toys weekly and check our bird-safe rope guide before adding rope.
  • Nesting: quakers like to build. Give them safe shredding material, but skip fabric hides. Read about the dangers of cotton and fabric toys.
  • Placement: put the cage against a wall in a busy room, away from kitchens, draughts and direct sun.
  • Time out: a play stand gives your quaker somewhere safe to be outside the cage.

Quaker parrot cage FAQs

What size cage does a quaker parrot need?

At least about 60 cm wide and 45 cm deep for one bird, with room for perches at different heights. Go wider for a pair or a bird that spends long hours inside.

What bar spacing is best for a quaker?

About 1.5–2 cm. Avoid 2.5 cm large-parrot spacing, which is too wide for a bird this size.

Will a conure or ringneck cage suit a quaker?

Often, yes. Conures and Indian ringnecks are a similar size and need similar bar spacing. Check the internal width and wire strength, because quakers chew hard.

Is a monk parakeet the same as a quaker parrot?

Yes. Monk parakeet and quaker parrot are two names for the same bird, so the same cage advice applies.
