Bird Breeding Cages UK: Budgie, Canary & Finch Breeders

Short answer: a good breeding cage for budgies, canaries or finches is long rather than tall. It has close bar spacing (about 1–1.2 cm), a removable divider so you can introduce a pair safely, room to hang a nest box, and pull-out trays so you can clean without disturbing the birds. Double breeders and stackable holding cages let you run several pairs in a small space.

We keep our breeding range small and practical. Below is what each cage offers, using the details from our product pages, plus the nest boxes that go with them.

What a breeding cage needs

  • A removable divider: lets a pair see each other before they share space, and lets you separate youngsters later.
  • Close bar spacing: about 1–1.2 cm for budgies, canaries and finches, so small birds can’t squeeze out.
  • Length: small birds fly side to side, so a longer cage gives more useful room than a taller one.
  • Space for a nest box: inside or hung on the front, where you can check it easily.
  • Easy cleaning: pull-out trays and front access mean less disturbance while birds are sitting.
  • Stackability: handy if you run several pairs.

Double breeders vs stacking holding cages

Double breeder

A double breeder is one long cage split by a removable divider. Use both halves for two pairs, or take the divider out to give one pair or a group of youngsters the full length. It’s the classic set-up for canary and budgie keepers.

Holding and breeding cages in sets

Sets of matching box cages are useful when you need several separate spaces: for pairs, for weaned young birds, or for resting birds between rounds. They stack neatly and keep a bird room tidy.

Rainforest Lorenzo Double Breeder

The Lorenzo is a double breeder with a removable divider, so two compartments can become one. It comes with four perches and four bowls, and the cages stack up to four high, so you can grow your set-up over time. Add the matching Lorenzo stand to raise it to a comfortable working height. The product page doesn’t list exact measurements, so ask us if you need them before ordering.

Manu holding and breeding cages, box of 4

The Manu set gives you four 76 cm-long cages with 1.2 cm bars, each with two perches and two bowls. That’s a good fit for budgie pairs, or for holding young birds once they’re weaned.

Sizes and bar spacing for small birds

For budgies, canaries and most finches, bar spacing of about 1–1.2 cm is right. Very small finches, such as waxbills, may need closer bars than that, so check against your own birds. Choose length over height: a breeding pair needs to fly from perch to perch, and a long cage gives them that. Our bar spacing guide and size guide give more detail by species.

Once breeding season is over, many keepers move their birds into a flight cage. See our flight cages guide, our finch and canary cages guide and our budgie cages guide.

Breeding cage FAQs

What size breeding cage does a budgie pair need?

A cage of around 75 cm long or more, with 1–1.2 cm bars and space for a nest box, suits one pair. The Manu cages are 76 cm long.

Do I need a divider?

It helps a lot. A divider lets a new pair get used to each other safely, and lets you split off young birds or a bird that’s being bullied.

Can I use a breeding cage as an everyday cage?

Yes, for small birds such as budgies, canaries and finches, as long as it’s big enough for the number of birds and they get plenty of toys and time to fly.

Can I stack the cages?

The Lorenzo double breeders stack up to four high. The product page doesn’t say whether the Manu cages stack, so ask us if you plan to. Always make sure each cage is level and stable.
