Finch & Canary Cages UK: Flight Cages & Sizes

Short answer: finches and canaries fly from side to side rather than climb, so choose a cage that is long rather than tall, with bar spacing of about 1 cm. A flight cage of 75–95 cm long gives a pair, or a small group, room to fly. Smaller cages are better suited to a single canary.

Finches and canaries are happiest when they can fly short hops between perches all day. Below are the cages we stock that suit them, with measurements from each product page.

Why finches need length, not height

Unlike parrots, finches and canaries rarely climb the bars. They move by flying, so a tall, narrow cage wastes most of its space. Look at the length first and place perches at each end, leaving the middle clear for flight. Keep food, water and a bath near the perches, not under them.

Size and bar spacing

  • Bar spacing: about 1 cm. Small finches such as zebra finches can squeeze through gaps that look tiny, so don’t go wider than about 1.2 cm.
  • One canary: a cage of 45 cm or more long can work, as long as it has time to fly.
  • A pair or small group of finches: 75 cm or more long. Bigger is better, and finches are happiest kept in pairs or groups.
  • A small flock: a large flight cage or an indoor aviary.

Rainforest Granada: our biggest small-bird flight cage

The Granada is a large flight cage built for small birds such as finches, canaries, budgies and cockatiels. At 94 cm long, with 1 cm bars, it gives a small group real room to fly. It comes with three perches that run the full length of the cage, four food and water bowls, and several doors for easy access.

Rainforest Amazona II: wide, with a play top

The Amazona II is listed for budgies, finches and small parrots. It’s 81 cm wide with 1 cm bars, an 81 cm internal perch, a play-top perch and four bowls. It can be used without its stand.

Liberta Oregon: good value for a pair

The Oregon is roughly 78 cm wide, with 10 mm bars, a large front door, a slide-out tray and a wheeled stand with storage underneath. It comes with two wooden perches and four feeders, and it’s finished in non-toxic antique metal.

Liberta Missouri: compact, for one canary

The Missouri is 46.8 cm long with 1 cm bars. It’s listed for budgies, finches and canaries, and converts into an open-top cage with a perch. At this size it suits one canary that gets time out, rather than a pair of finches.

Keeping pairs and groups

  • Finches are social: keep them in pairs or small groups, never alone.
  • Canaries are fine alone: a single male canary often sings more when kept on his own.
  • Don’t overcrowd: add length as you add birds. If birds squabble, give them more space or split them up.
  • Breeding: for breeding pairs, see our bird breeding cages guide.
  • Flight cages: our flight cages buying guide covers more models, including cages for budgies.

Finch and canary cage FAQs

What bar spacing do finches need?

About 1 cm, and no more than about 1.2 cm. Very small finches can slip through wider gaps.

What size cage is best for two finches?

Aim for 75 cm or more long. The Oregon (about 78 cm) and Granada (94 cm) both give a pair room to fly.

Can finches and canaries live together?

Often, yes, in a roomy flight cage or aviary with plenty of perches and more than one feeding station. Watch them closely at first and separate any birds that bully others.

Can I use a budgie cage for finches?

Yes, if the bars are about 1 cm apart and the cage is long rather than tall. See our budgie cages guide and small bird cages guide.
